- The 6-foot-4, 157-pound Tietjens established State of Iowa prep (7-3) and collegiate (7-6½) records in the high jump
- Placed third at the NCAA Championship as a freshman and sophomore, Tietjens won the 1985 national indoor title with a leap of 7-5 in his junior season
- Won three Big Eight high jump titles
- Broke his foot during the summer of 1982 and it never healed properly, preventing him from competing as a senior
- The first seven-foot high jumper in state prep history, he was inducted into the Drake Relays and Iowa High School Track Coaches Halls of Fame
