- Member of the track & field team in the 1970s when it transitioned from club status to varsity intercollegiate athletics
- Under the banner of the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), Iowa State participated in its first national championship in 1974 and Carroll was a member of a title-winning 440-yard relay
- An AIAW All-American in four different events at that 1974 national competition
- As a prep athlete, Carroll won four state championships (60, 100, 200 and long jump) one season to score all of her school's points
- Married four-time U.S. Olympic Gold Medalist Al Oerter (discus) in 1982
