- Set an ISU season record with 50 wins as a junior, which included NCAA and Big Eight Championships at 142 pounds
- After the retirement of Harold Nichols, Gibbons got the chance to wrestle for his brother (Jim, who replaced Nichols as coach) as a senior and placed third at nationals
- Won 11 tournaments in his career, including the 1982 Midlands Open
- First four-time Class 3A state champion in Iowa, he was 105-5 as a prep
