- One of college gymnastics greatest vaulters, he won three NCAA titles (one at LSU, two at Iowa State)
- First gymnast in NCAA history to register a perfect “10.0” (that score came at the 1981 national meet immediately after his competition recorded a 9.9)
- The first African-American to qualify for a U.S. Olympics Gymnastics Team (1980), but our nation’s boycott prevented him from competing
- Nine-time All-American – spread among the all-around, vault and floor exercise – at LSU and Iowa State
- Led the Cyclones to a NCAA runner-up finish in the 1981 national championship
- Rose to a leadership position (Chief Operating Officer) with USA Gymnastics and was inducted into that organization's Hall of Fame in 2015
