- First runner ever to break the 27-minute barrier in the 10,000 meters, he shattered the world record by nine seconds in a 1993 race at the Bislett Games (track experts called that performance the greatest distance race ever run)
- Won every collegiate cross country race he competed in except for the three NCAA meets, where he finished second (1983), third (1984) and second (1985)
- Led Iowa State to two Big Eight Cross Country titles and national finishes of eighth (1983), 10th (1984) and sixth (1985)
- Six-time All-American, including three NCAA runner-up finishes
- The 1991 world champion in the 5,000 meters and a Kenyan Olympian in 1988 (Seoul) and 1992 (Barcelona)Â
