LAIE, Hawaii (AP) - Tyray Pearson sparked runs at the end of the first half and start of the second and finished with 13 points as Iowa State beat Troy State 66-56 in the opener of the Yahoo! Sports Invitational on Thursday.
Pearson, filling in for foul-plagued Paul Shirley, had four points during a 22-4 run as the Cyclones built a 34-22 lead by halftime.
Filling in for Martin Rancik, Pearson scored seven straight points as Iowa State built a 45-25 lead five minutes into the second half.
The Trojans countered with an 11-0 run and cut their deficit to eight points and closed within seven, 59-52.
Kantrail Horton converted on a three-point play and gave the Cyclones a 10-point lead.
Paul Shirley scored 14 points. Rancik had 11 and Jake Sullivan 10. Horton scored nine points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had seven assists.
Iowa State built a 42-29 edge in rebounding and Troy State shot 18-for-55 from the field.
