TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Iowa State softball team opened the 2003 season with 10-2 loss vs. No. 23 Oregon State Friday afternoon at Arizona State's Farrinton Softball Stadium. The game was apart of the Fiesta Bowl Tournament, hosted by Arizona State. The Cyclones took on Utah in a game played late Friday night.
Against Oregon State, neither team scored until the third inning, where both had two runs. Senior Erica Martinez hit her first homerun of the season and senior Katie Ruby and junior Kelly Wardein each had a double. Oregon State scored the game-winning run in the fourth inning and went on to score three runs in the fifth inning and four runs in the sixth to win the game, 10-2.
Freshman Kristen Karanzias got her first collegiate start on the mound and senior Jen Bice also saw action on the mound in relief for Karanzias in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Cyclones will continue competing in the Fiesta Bowl Tournament on Saturday, where they will square off with No. 2 Arizona at 1 p.m.
