Cyclones Fall on the Road to Colorado, 84-69

BOULDER, Colo. - Michel Morandais scored 18 points and Stephane Pelle and David Harrison each had 17 as Colorado capitalized on Iowa State's early shooting woes to beat the Cyclones 84-69 on Saturday.

Colorado (14-7, 4-4 Big 12) also got 14 points from Blair Wilson, who was 4-for-5 from 3-point range.

Jackson Vroman had 20 points and 10 rebounds for Iowa State (12-7, 2-6), which dropped its 13th straight conference road game. Jake Sullivan had 17 points, 14 in the second half.

The Buffaloes jumped out to a 16-0 lead in the first 6:21 of the game as Iowa State missed its first 12 shots.

Wilson's 3-pointers both started and ended the 16-0 spurt, and Harrison had two layups.

Tim Barnes broke the Cyclones' scoring drought, pulling up to hit a 16-foot jumper on a fastbreak with 11:44 left in the half. Sullivan followed with a 3-pointer, making it 16-5.

But Pelle then made three straight baskets, including a steal and slam on the other end, and Iowa State, hitting only 2 of its first 19 shots, trailed 22-5.

Another 3-pointer by Wilson gave Colorado its biggest lead of the half, 27-7, with 7:29 left in the half.

The Cyclones cut the deficit to 31-18 on Vroman's three-point play and fastbreak layup.

Colorado, shooting 46 percent to Iowa State's 26 percent (9-of-35), led 39-23 at intermission.

Sullivan, Iowa State's leading scorer who had been hitting 49 percent from the floor, was only 1-for-7 in the half, including 1-for-4 from 3-point range, where the Cyclones were 2-for-12.

Three ISU starters - Sullivan, Jared Homan and Adam Haluska - combined to go 1-for-16 in the half.

Iowa State got no closer than 12 points in the second half.

Wilson's 3-pointer pushed Colorado's lead to 50-30 with 16:36 left in the second half.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Sullivan and Barnes highlighted an 8-0 run that made it 50-38 with 14:15 left. Three minutes later, Harrison's three-point play gave Colorado a 59-41 lead.

Iowa State trimmed the deficit to 14 points on five occasions after that, but each time the Buffs countered.

For the game, Colorado shot 55 percent - becoming only the second team to shoot 50 percent or better against the Cyclones this season. Iowa State finished at 34 percent.
