MARIETTA, Ga. ? The Iowa State softball team fell to No. 21 Georgia Tech, late Saturday in the team's fifth and final game of the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic in Marietta, Georgia. The tournament is being hosted by Georgia Tech. With the loss, Iowa State falls to 7-16 on the season. Senior Julia Lindsey and freshman Cary Akins led the way for Iowa State with a hit each.
Georgia Tech jumped on the scoreboard right away with four runs in the first inning. The Yellow Jackets added two more in the second inning and yet another in the third to take a 7-0 lead going into the fourth inning. Lindsey got ISU's first hit in the fourth inning when she hit the ball just past the Georgia Tech second baseman. But Tech pitcher Jessica Sallinger struck out the next two ISU batters to squash the ISU scoring drive. The Yellow Jackets added four more runs in the fourth to win the game, 11-0.
Georgia Tech scored 11 runs on nine hits and had no errors, while Iowa State had no runs, two hits and two errors. Freshman Katie Reichling and sophomore Kristen Karanzias split time on the pitching mound, combining for two strikeouts and four walks. Reichling took the loss.
Iowa State ended the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic tournament with a 2-3 record with wins over Mercer and Florida A&M, while losing to College of Charleston, Minnesota, and Georgia Tech.
Iowa State will start conference play next weekend when it travels to Lubbock, Texas, to take on Texas Tech. The Cyclones and the Red Raiders will play Saturday, March 27, at 2 p.m., and will then play Texas Tech again on Sunday, March 28, starting at 11 a.m.
