AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State softball team fell, 10-1, to UNLV Thursday evening at the Rebels' Eller Media Stadium. The Cyclones' season-opener was a part of the 2005 UNLV Invitational featuring a six-team field. ISU's Jessica Quade, Cary Akins and Katie Reichling each tallied a hit in Thursday's contest.
The game was scoreless after an inning and a half when host UNLV exploded for six runs in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore Alyssa Ransom worked an inning and a third, allowing all six runs in the second inning before giving way to junior Kristen Karanzias who recorded the final two outs of the inning.
Iowa State put a run on the board in the top of the fourth inning with two outs when Quade drove in Kim Rodgers from second base with a single to left field. Rodgers got on base after being hit by a pitch. She then advanced to second when on a fielder's choice that failed to get Ashley Killeen at first base. However, the inning would end when Amber Woods grounded out.
UNVL added four insurance runs in the fifth inning to secure the Rebels' victory.
ISU plays again on Friday at 12:45 p.m. (CST) when it takes on Southern Illinois followed by a 5:15 p.m. (CST) contest against Michigan State. The Cyclones conclude the season-opening tournament on Saturday with a pair of game versus top-15 opponents, beginning with a second-ranked California at 10:30 a.m. (CST), followed by a 12:45 p.m. game with No. 14 Florida.
