The Bruins, who are the defending National Champions, led 3-0 after scoring three runs in the top half of the first inning. ISU had two hits in the bottom of the second, one by senior Diana Reuter and one by sophomore Fallon Johnson. However, the Cyclones were unable to convert those hits into runs and ended the second inning without scoring.
With the score 9-0 in favor of UCLA in the bottom of the fifth inning, ISU tried to rally. Freshman Lindsey Black, who made her collegiate debut, garnered her first career hit, a single up the middle. Senior Kim Rodgers singled to left, advancing Johnson, who was pinch running for Black, to second.
