No. 4 UCLA Shuts Out Iowa State

FRESNO, Calif. ? No. 4 UCLA scored six runs in the fourth inning to defeat Iowa State, 9-0, Friday night on the second day of the Fresno State Bulldog Classic. With the loss, ISU falls to 2-10 on the season while UCLA improves to 13-5. Sophomore Alyssa Ransom hurled a complete game for ISU and her record fell to 1-6.

The Bruins, who are the defending National Champions, led 3-0 after scoring three runs in the top half of the first inning. ISU had two hits in the bottom of the second, one by senior Diana Reuter and one by sophomore Fallon Johnson. However, the Cyclones were unable to convert those hits into runs and ended the second inning without scoring.

With the score 9-0 in favor of UCLA in the bottom of the fifth inning, ISU tried to rally. Freshman Lindsey Black, who made her collegiate debut, garnered her first career hit, a single up the middle. Senior Kim Rodgers singled to left, advancing Johnson, who was pinch running for Black, to second. Sophomore Ashley Killeen reached base on a fielder's choice, but Johnson was out at third on the play. Sophomore Jessica Quade then drew a walk to reach first and Killeen and Rodgers advanced to second and third, respectively. But the rally ended when Fresno native Misty Kimura grounded out to the short stop to conclude the game.

Iowa State continues play at the Fresno State Bulldog Classic on Saturday by taking on St. John's at 11 a.m. (CST) and finishes the day with a 3 p.m. (CST) contest against Kent State.
