HOUSTON, Texas - Wichita State used a six-run third inning to down Iowa State, 6-0, despite a 10 strikeout performance from Amie Ford in the first game of the Crowne Plaza Classic in Houston, Texas.
The Shockers (5-4) were able to capitalize on a pair of third inning Iowa State errors to plate six runs.
Brooke Usher started the inning with a single and would score on a Katie McGeeney single. After a costly error loaded the bases, Ashley Lynn cleared them with a double off the centerfield wall to go up 5-0. The Shockers added another run on an Iowa State error.
The Cyclones (1-4) threatened in the fifth but were unable to get on the board after having runners on first and second with no outs. Iowa State left eight on base for the game.
Ford (1-2) got the loss, allowing six runs, only one of which was earned, on 11 hits.
Margo Pruis (3-2) went the distance for the Shockers, limiting the Cyclones to four hits.
Lynn's three RBI paced the Shockers offensively, who also got a 2-for-4 performance from catcher Julie Darling.
The Cyclones will continue tournament action against No. 25 Brigham Young at 1 p.m. Friday afternoon.
Notes: Ford's 10 strikeouts were the most by a Cyclone since Alyssa Ransom's 10 against Ole Miss on March 6 last year.
