AMES, Iowa - Jennifer Bigbee hit a two-run home run and Alyssa Ransom forced Drake to strand 12 runners as Iowa State defeated the Bulldogs, 5-2, in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Southwest Athletic Complex.
The Cyclones (17-18) trailed 1-0 after Drake (15-22) strung together three two-out hits in the top of the fourth to grab the lead.
Alyssa Ransom got the first two Bulldog hitters out but Jamie Desjarlais kept the inning alive with a single to left field. Desjarlais then stole second base and scored when Kristin Birocci roped a single through the left side.
The lead was Drake's for just a short time as Bigbee came to the plate with Whitney Perkins, who pinch ran after a double by Jessica Quade, standing on second base and one-out. Bigbee fell behind in the count but lifted a one ball, two strike delivery from Jessica Hicks into the air and over the left centerfield fence to give the Cyclones the 2-1 lead. The homer was Bigbee's first career home run.
The fifth inning was a wild one as the Cyclones added three more runs. Ellen Buehner beat out an infield single to shortstop to start the rally. The next batter, Fallon Johnson, laid down a sacrifice bunt that advanced Buehner to second. Johnson hustled down the line and an error allowed Johnson to be safe at first. Buehner hustled around second base and stood on third. With the play seemingly over, Buehner stole home when she noticed that no Bulldog was covering the plate, putting the Cyclones up 3-1.
Kristy Olsen then sacrificed Johnson over to second base and Katie Reichling stepped to the plate with one-out. Reichling dropped a hit into right field that bounced over the diving Lexie Rose. Johnson scored as Reichling raced into third with her second triple of the year. A throwing error by Rose allowed Reichling to cross home plate and push the Cyclone lead to 5-1.
The Bulldogs got one back in the sixth as Mollie Daniels blasted her first career home run to cut the Iowa State lead to 5-2.
Drake made it interesting in the seventh as they loaded the bases after Ransom got the first two batters of the inning out. Ransom forced Daniels to pop out to shortstop to end the game.
Ransom (7-11) tossed her 55th career complete game, allowing 10 hits but just two runs, to pick up the win. Ransom struck out six Bulldogs in the game.
Hicks (8-10) got the loss for Drake, going four innings and allowing two runs on three hits.
Reichling went 1-for-2 with a triple and a RBI. Reichling set a personal single-season high with her 16th RBI of the year.
Daniels, Desjarlais and Jaci Faidley each collected a pair of hits to lead the Bulldogs.
Iowa State will be back in action tomorrow as they welcome another intrastate rival, Northern Iowa, to Ames. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
