AMES, Iowa - Jiri Hubalek and Wesley Johnson recorded 22 and 20 points, respectively, to pace Iowa State to a 76-64 win over Albany Sunday night in Hilton Coliseum. Johnson poured in 17 of his 20 points in the second half and Hubalek recorded his eighth career double-double with a team-high 10 boards, as ISU improves to 8-5 on the season.
"I was scared to death of this game, and I think you now know why," ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. "Albany is a well-coached team and run their offense with precision. They play basketball the right way, and I knew we would have our hands full trying to defend them."
Albany built an 18-14 lead with 10:16 remaining in the first half, going on a 15-5 run to eclipse an early Cyclone advantage. ISU made its first three shots in the game, but then went cold, making just 3-of-its-next-11 from the floor.
The Great Danes were up 24-20 with 4:10 left in the first half until the Cyclones went on a 12-4 run to go ahead 32-28 at the break. Hubalek had eight points in the run, ending the half with a team-high 13 points. ISU shot just 36.0 percent in the opening period. Johnson played just four minutes in the first half after picking up two early fouls.
Johnson made up for his short stint in the first period by coming out firing on all cylinders in the second half. Johnson scored on four-straight possessions, burying three treys and converting a conventional 3-point play, scoring 12 points in just over two minutes to push ISU out in front 49-33 with 15:19 left in the game.
"Wesley is capable of getting it going," McDermott added. "He is a talented player, and every day he is going to get a little better on both ends of the floor as he gets back into shape. His teammates did a great job finding him."
Johnson added another trey at the 13:59 mark, as ISU held its biggest lead at 52-33 thanks to a 20-5 run to open the second half. Johnson connected on his first five 3-pointers of the game. Albany then answered with a run of its own, getting back-to-back 3-pointers from Brian Lillis and Josh Martin to cut the Cyclone lead to 54-44 with 10:04 left.
The Cyclones again upped their lead to 15 points (62-47) with 6:13 remaining, but the Great Danes would not go away. A driving basket by Lillis and a trey by Brent Wilson were part of a 7-0 run that cut the ISU lead to 62-54 with 5:02 remaining. The lead never got below eight points the rest of the way, as ISU again made its free-throws down the stretch. The Cyclones made 24-of-30 shots from the foul line.
ISU plays host to USC-Upstate, Wednesday Jan. 2 in Hilton Coliseum. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
