SACRAMENTO, Calif. ? Colorado State defeated Iowa State, 4-0, in the second game of Thursday afternoon's doubleheader at the Sacramento Softball Complex in Sacramento, Calif., to earn a split.
The Rams (17-12) got two hits each from Allison Majam, Ashley Munoz and Robyn Mask as they bounced back from a 6-1 loss to the Cyclones (12-20) in the first game.
Alex Johnson went 2-for-3 for the Cyclones, raising her season hit total to 34, just 11 hits shy of the single-season freshman record of 45 held by Erin Woods (1996). Courtney Wray, Jessica Quade and Ariel Coburn recorded the other hits for the Cyclones.
Colorado State got on the board in the second inning on a Munoz homer off Iowa State starter Charissa Carlin. The Rams tacked on another run in the third as Majam singled to center off Carlin, scoring Mask and increasing their lead to 2-0.
Any hopes of an Iowa State comeback were dashed in the seventh as Colorado State tacked on two insurance runs. Brittany Huerta connected for her eighth homer of the season, a two-run shot off Cyclone reliever Amie Ford, to make it 4-0 in favor of the Rams.
Colorado State's Rebecca Penland (3-2) didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning when Johnson doubled to right field to lead off the inning. Johnson, who has four doubles this year, was stranded at third base as the inning came to an end.
Iowa State did threaten in the seventh as Quade and Coburn singled. Penland was able to strike Kristy Olsen out to end the game and the Cyclones' two-game winning streak.
The Cyclones will be back in action Friday when they take part in the Capital Classic in Sacramento. ISU will face Illinois at noon and Sacramento State at 7:30 p.m.
