Cyclones Defeat Western Illinois, 3-1

MACOMB, Ill. ? Freshman Courtney Wray had two doubles and scored two runs to lift Iowa State to a 3-1 win over Western Illinois Wednesday afternoon at Mary Ellen McKee Softball Stadium in Macomb, Ill.

Wray paced the Cyclones (16-22), who had five doubles in the game, going 2-for-3. Wray's double in the third was her sixth of the season.

Alex Johnson went 2-for-2 with a double and a run batted in, her 18^th of the her freshman campaign. Jessica Quade and Katie Reichling had the other doubles for the Cyclones in the win.

The Cyclones got on the board in the first as Wray roped a one-out double off of Western Illinois' pitcher Kamren Ferguson and came around to score on another double, this one by Reichling, that was just out of the reach of right fielder Jennifer Garcia.

Iowa State added two more in the third inning to push the lead to 3-0.

Fallon Johnson got the rally started with a single to left field and Kristy Olsen reached on a throwing error by Ferguson, allowing Johnson to move to third. Johnson then scored on a wild pitch and Wray doubled to right field to score Olsen.

The Westerwinds did get one back in fourth as Rachel Sinks scored on an errant pickoff attempt at third base by Cyclone catcher Ashley Killeen.

That was all Western Illinois (7-15) would get as Iowa State senior hurler Alyssa Ransom tossed a brilliant game, limiting the Westerwinds to just one run on seven hits. Ransom (5-7) struck out four in the win.

Ferguson (2-3) got the loss after allowing three runs on seven ISU hits.
