SUNNYVALE, Calif. ? Cal Poly scored four first inning runs and held on to defeat
Cal Poly (15-6), which is coached by former Iowa State standout Jenny Condon, jumped out to a quick lead as shortstop Melissa Pura hit a two-run double off Iowa State (7-16) starter Charissa Carlin in the top of the first. The Mustangs tacked on two more runs on an error by the Cyclones and a fielder's choice to make it 4-0 after one.
Cyclone freshman Alex Johnson continued her stellar hitting, blasting a solo homer in the bottom of the first to cut the lead to 4-1. The homer was Johnson's fourth of the season.
The Cyclones scored two more in the bottom of the third to close the gap to 4-3. ISU took advantage of a pair of errors by Cal Poly and a run scoring single by Alex Johnson that scored Fallon Johnson. Katie Reichling hit a sacrifice fly to score Kristy Olsen.
That was all the scoring in the game despite the Cyclones advancing Olsen to third base in the fifth inning.
Alex Johnson finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs batted, her 15th and 16th of the year, to raise her season average to .329. Olsen, Reichling and Courtney Wray each recorded hits in the loss.
Emily Hively (2-0) went the distance to pick up the win for the Mustangs. Hively allowed three runs on five hits.
