Hoze, in her final season as a Cyclone, exceeded expectations, crushing her former personal-best effort by nearly a foot. The Wisconsin native's leap of 20-3 3/4 bumped her into the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships field in
“I am very excited and it was a long time coming for me,” said Hoze. “I have been progressing throughout the season and I feel great about scoring points for the team. I have reached what I strived for this season but I have a lot left in my tank for the regional meet.”
Jumps coach Ron McEachran was surprised by the breakout performance, but says she has had it in her all along.
“It is certainly unexpected,” said McEachran. “But I have seen signs all year that she has had this in her. Today she came down the runway and drove through it. She deserves this and she belongs here with the best of the Big 12. It was fun to watch and I am very happy for Priya.”
A strong showing from Rebecca Williams boosted her into tomorrow's final in the 100-meter hurdles along with teammate Jenna Caffrey. Williams' effort of 13.40 seconds gives her the second-fastest qualifying time going into Sunday's final.
In a preliminary run in the 800-meters, Iowa State senior Jenny Mockler clocked 2:08.83, earning herself a trip to Sunday's final. Mockler stormed out to an early lead setting the pace for most of the race until being nipped by Baylor's Danielle Bradley in the last 10 meters. Overall, Mockler's performance is the fourth-fastest qualifying time.
In her final Big 12 Conference meet, Sara Boisen fell just short of qualifying for Sunday's 400-meter hurdle final. The senior finished ninth overall with a time of 1:00.39 in a field of heats packed with contenders. The field's top 10 athletes, including Boisen, all hit the regional qualifying mark in their preliminary run. This will not be the senior's final run in a Cyclone uniform. Boisen will compete in the 400-hurdles at the NCAA Midwest Regional.
Cyclones Angie Lageschulte, Lashawn Wright, Dana Peters and Katie Paulson all set personal bests Saturday in their respective events. Lageschulte's leap of 17-11 shattered her personal-record by nearly four inches. Wright had a clocking of 11.91 in the 100-meter dash. Peters ran a time of 4:48.16 in the 1,500 prelims and Paulson achieved her personal best with a time of 2:14.0 in the 800-meter run.
