Six-Run Inning Propels Cyclones To Victory

TUCSON, Ariz. ? A six-run second inning lifted Iowa State to a 6-1 victory over New Mexico State Saturday evening at the Hillenbrand Invitational. Iowa State's 13-3 record ties for the second-best 16-game mark in team history, matching the 1985 squad and trailing the 1975 squad (14-2).
After a scoreless first inning, Iowa State jumped all over New Mexico State hurler Kim Watson for six runs in the second.
Ariel Coburn led off the inning with an infield single before advancing to third on an error and a passed ball. After Watson got a pair of strikeouts, Michelle Dettmer ripped her first career double to score Coburn and Jacquelyn Beatty and go ahead 2-0. After a free pass to Kristy Olsen, Kelsey Kidwell walked to load the bases for Iowa State's leading hitter Courtney Wray. Wray proceeded to smack a single down the right field line, scoring Dettmer and Olsen. Alex Johnson was then hit by a pitch and Coburn drove in two runs on her second at bat of the inning to increase the lead to 6-0 Iowa State.
Rachel Zabriskie (7-1) was dominant for Iowa State, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out six. The lone run came in the fifth inning as Ashley Maroda scored on a fielder's choice after singling to left center to lead off the inning.
Watson (7-6) allowed six runs on five hits in two innings of work. Samantha Dillard was solid in relief for the Aggies, giving up just three hits in five innings.
Iowa State will wrap up tournament play Sunday with a game against Illinois-Chicago at noon (CT).
