Iowa State Sweeps New Mexico To Earn Split

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ? The Iowa State softball team swept a pair of games Sunday to earn a weekend split with New Mexico. The Cyclones (16-8) won Sunday's opening game 18-5 before rallying to take game two 7-5 in a 10-inning thriller.

In the first game, ISU had 14 hits en route to scoring the most runs by a Cyclone squad since 1979. The Cyclones scored three in the first inning and six in the second inning before putting nine more runs on the board in the third.

Carrie Monroe drove in four runs and Amanda Bradberry three to lead the Cyclones in the win, which snapped a three-game losing streak. Alex Johnson added a pair of RBI and Kelsey Kidwell finished with three hits in the contest.

Rachel Zabriskie got the win for ISU, allowing just one run in three innings of work.

In the second contest, ISU's bats went silent for the first four innings as the Lobos jumped out to a 4-0 lead. The Cyclones cut into the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth before scoring three more in the sixth to take the lead. Courtney Wray came up with a big two-run double in the sixth and scored the go-ahead run on a single from Amanda Bradberry.

The Lobos tied it in the bottom half of the sixth inning and the teams went scoreless until the 10th inning.

With the international tie breaker in effect in the 10th, Carleigh Berry was placed on second to start the inning. Monroe collected her fourth hit in as many at-bats to score Berry and give ISU the lead.

The Cyclones added another run and Zabriskie (9-5) sent the Lobos down in order in the bottom of the 10th to win her second game of the day.

Wray and Kelsey Kidwell went 3-for-5 in the game.

The Cyclones return to action next weekend at the San Diego Classic II. ISU opens tournament play Friday against Quinnipiac.
