AMES, Iowa- Scott Christopherson continued his hot shooting, knocking down four 3-pointers en route to 16 points, as Iowa State defeated Texas Southern, 65-54 Sunday evening in Hilton Coliseum.
Christopherson was one of three Cyclones in double figures, as Iowa State improves to 9-2 on the season. Jamie Vanderbeken added 14 points and Diante Garrett chipped in with 16 points for the Cyclones. Vanderbeken posted career highs in blocks (5) and assists (5).
A key 19-6 run at the end of the first half and at the beginning of the second stanza helped jumpstart the Cyclones after a sluggish start.
Iowa State raced out to an early lead at 14-2 behind a pair of Vanderbeken 3-pointers. The shots then quit falling for the Cyclones, as the Tigers crept back into the game, cutting the Iowa State lead to one point (24-23) with 4:21 left before intermission.
It was still a two-point game with less than two minutes left before the break, but the Cyclones scored the last six points of the first half, including a tip-in from Vanderbeken just before the horn to give Iowa State a 32-24 halftime lead.
Jake Anderson grabbed 10 rebounds, his third double-digit rebounding effort of the season.
Iowa State will take a week off for finals and will hit the court again next Sunday, playing host to Dartmouth at 1 p.m.
