Cyclones Hit Three Homers In Rout

HOUSTON, Texas - Iowa State hit three home runs and Rachel Zabriskie didn't allow a hit in four innings of work as the Cyclones beat UT-San Antonio, 9-0, Sunday morning at the Marriott Houston Invitational. With the win, Iowa State improves to 6-5 this season.
Alex Johnson, Sydni Jones and Courtney Wray each connected on two-run homers in the win and Iowa State held a 12-1 edge in hits. The only UT-San Antonio (2-8) hit, a single, came in the fifth inning off ISU reliever Lauren Kennewell.
Zabriskie (5-3) tossed four perfect innings to pick up the win. The junior struck out seven in the win. Kennewell allowed just one hit in relief.
Johnson was 3-for-3 with a homer and a triple to go along with a single. Kelsey Kidwell and Carleigh Berry had two hits each for the Cyclones, who won their second straight. Heidi Kidwell had a single in the game, running her hitting streak to 10 games.
The Cyclones lit up the scoreboard in the second inning on Johnson's leadoff homer. The homer was her third of the season and the 21st of her career.
ISU added two more in the inning as Carrie Monroe doubled to score Amanda Bradberry and came home on Kelsey Kidwell's single, which ran her hitting streak to eight games.
The Cyclones made it 6-0 with three more runs in the third inning. Johnson had a run-scoring triple and Jones blasted her second homer of the season, a three-run shot, to highlight the scoring.
In the top of the fifth it was Wray's turn. After Berry singled and stole second to leadoff the inning, Wray lifted her first home run of the season and the eighth of her career to put the Cyclones up 8-0.
Johnson then collected her third hit of the game and came around to score two batters later as Bradberry doubled to plate the final run of the game for ISU.
The Cyclones will return to the field Friday at the Georgia Softball Classic in Athens, Ga. ISU opens tournament play against South Alabama at 10 a.m. (CT).
