COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The No. 21 Texas A&M Aggies jumped out early against Iowa State on Saturday, taking a 4-0 lead in the first and building to a 8-0, five-inning win. The loss drops Iowa State to 16-12, 1-2 in the Big 12, on the year and moves the Aggies to 29-8 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
With two outs in the first, Iowa State starter Rachel Zabriskie (10-7) hit first baseman Rhiannon Kliesing and walked pitcher Melissa Dumezich. Amber Garza drove in Kliesing on a single and, after a walk of Nicole Morgan, left fielder Kelsey Spittler drove in all three runners with a double before Zabriskie got out of the inning.
The Aggies added three more runs in the bottom of the second on two wild pitches, one by Zabriskie and one by reliever Lauren Kennewell. The third run scored on an illegal pitch by Kennewell.
Zabriskie, the Iowa State pitcher of record on Saturday, threw 1.1 innings, gave up four hits, seven runs, walked three and struck out two.
The final blow came in the bottom of the fifth when Kennewell walked Kliesing with the bases loaded, scoring Spittler from third and giving Texas A&M the shutout victory.
In 3.1 innings of relief, Kennewell allowed four hits, one run while walking four and striking out three.
Iowa State managed only one hit, a single by Erica Miller in the fourth inning, against Dumezich and put two batters in scoring position, both in the third inning, against the Aggies. Miller's hit extends her hit-streak to three.
Dumezich improves to 16-5 on the year, pitching five innings, giving up one hit and no runs while striking out seven, walking one and hitting one batter.
On Sunday, the teams will take the field at noon CDT for the series finale.
