CONWAY, S.C. – Iowa State split a doubleheader at the “Battle at the Beach” Satruday at the CCU Softball Stadium. The Cyclones defeated St. Bonaventure 3-2 after falling to Ole Miss 13-5 in six innings. Iowa State is now 6-2 on the season while Ole Miss is 5-4 and SBU 0-3.
Game Two: Iowa State 3 St. Bonaventure 2
Iowa State made quick work in each of the first two innings to get on the board. Brittany Gomez led off the bottom of the first after being hit by a pitch and immediately stole second during Maddie Reese's at-bat. Reese brought her some with an RBI-single to make it 1-0 Cyclones.
Reese capped off ISU's offensive work in the bottom of the second, too. Nychole Antillon got on base via a fielding error, Hope Scheffert recorded her first career hit and Kelsey McFarland drew a walk to load the bases. After a Gomez strikeout, Reese hit into a fielder's choice that saw Scheffert out at third, but Antillon cross home plate to make it 2-0.
From there Brianna Weilbacher kept the Bonnies at bay, throwing a no-hitter through the first four innings. SBU rallied in the top of the fifth, finally getting a hit on the board and eventually a walk when Kelli Rohan drew a bases loaded walk to make it 2-1 ISU.
The Cyclones got a crucial insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Scheffert's grounder to second was misfielded by SBU's Desiree Gonzalez to allow Jorden Spendlove to score to make it 3-1 Cyclones. St. Bonaventure had a final stand in the seventh, loading the bases with one out. Kiera Lorenzo hit a single to center that allowed one to score, but Gomez had an accurate throw that got pinch runner Carly Bilchak at the plate to end the game in ISU's favor, 3-2.
Game One: Ole Miss 13 Iowa State 5 (Six Innings)
The Cyclones got in a hole early as the Rebels were able to load the bases without getting a base hit. Ole Miss' first hit of the game was a big one as Bri Payne cleared the bases with a grand slam over the scoreboard in right field to give the Rebels an early 4-0 lead.
Down 7-0 after three innings, Iowa State finally got some offensive momentum as Rachel Hartman took advantage of an error and Lexi Slater posted a double to get two on scoring position early. ISU looked like they would leave empty-handed after a pair of outs, but Gabby Voulgaris drew a walk to load the bases and Kelsey McFarland got ISU on the board with an RBI-single to left to make it 7-1.
Then with an 8-1 deficit to start the fifth, ISU got back to work as Maddie Reese and Hartman posted single to set the stage for Lexi Slater, who fired her first home run of the season to centerfield to reduce the Rebels lead to 8-4. Iowa State looked to keep the momentum going as Jorden Spendlove and Nychole Antillon both got on base, but they could not keep it going as the Cyclones struck out twice to end the frame.
Iowa State added one in the sixth after Brittany Gomez recorded her second hit of the game and seventh stolen base of the season to lead off the inning. Aly Cappaert eventually brought Gomez home on a fielder's choice.
