SAN DIEGO – Maddie Reese's bottom of the sixth inning home run to leftfield lifted Iowa State past North Dakota 3-2 Friday afternoon at the USD Softball Complex. The win improves ISU to 10-3 on the season, while UND is now 3-7.
Early Error Puts UND on Top
Once again, it was an error that saw Iowa State's opposition jump out to an early advantage. In the top of the first, Brianna Weilbacher started the game for the Cyclones by issuing a walk to Taylor Donnelly. Two batters later, and with Donnelly on second, it looked as if ISU had gotten out of the inning as UND catcher Megan Keegan grounded one to third.
However, Nychole Antillon's throw was well short of first and Jorden Spendlove could not scoop it in, allowing Donnelly to come home and put North Dakota ahead 1-0.
Cyclones Get on the Board
An RBI-single by Megan Keegan doubled UND's lead to 2-0 heading to the bottom of the fifth and got the Cyclones into action. Lexi Slater led off the bottom of the inning with a single to right and two batters later, Rachel Hartman got on after being hit by a pitch. A wild pitch during Spendlove's at-bat advanced the runners into scoring position, allowing her grounder to second to be the chance to bring home a run and cut the deficit in half.
After pinch hitter Sammie HIldreth drew a hit by pitch, Gomez demonstrated her speed as her grounder to short left no plays for UND as Hartman's pinch runner, Kaila Konz, had already made it home and the game was now tied 2-2.
Reese Delivers Again
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Maddie Reese took the first pitch of her at-bat against Michaela Zins way over the leftfield wall to put ISU ahead for the first time in the game 3-2. It was Reese's fifth home run of the season, coming into this year she had four home runs in two seasons with the Cyclones.
Roggentien Shuts it Down
A scary moment for ISU happened in the bottom of the fourth inning as starter Brianna Weilbacher took a line drive to the side of the head. While she was able to leave the field on her own power, her stellar start to the game came to an abrupt end.
Stacy Roggentien came out from the ISU bullpen and delivered another outstanding effort to bring home the Cyclone win. The senior pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing three hits, a run and a walk while strike out a career-high five batters. Roggentien now has 15 strikeouts on the season in 15 2/3 innings. She had four strikeouts in 29 1/3 innings last year.
