LAS VEGAS – The UNLV Rebels used seven first-inning runs to ignite a 9-0 win over Iowa State in five innings Friday afternoon at Eller Media Stadium. The loss dropped the Cyclones to 11-6 on the season while the Rebels are now 11-10.
UNLV took advantage of two ISU errors and three walks allowed by the Cyclones to put up their big first-inning number that proved insurmountable.
Rebels Run Riot
After a scoreless first for Iowa State, UNLV broke out in a big way in its half of the first. However, it took a while to develop as it was not until there were two outs that the Rebels got on the board with an RBI double from Alyssa Cordova making it 1-0 UNLV. The next batter presented an opportunity to get out of the inning, but Jorden Spendlove dropped a foul ball to keep UNLV alive.
The Rebels took advantage, drawing back-to-back walks off Katie Johnson to up its lead to 2-0 followed by getting an RBI-single via Chrissi Omalza making it 3-0 UNLV. ISU brought in Stacy Roggentien for Johnson, but that did not help things as Jade Yadao-Valdez drove in two more to make it 5-0 Rebels. ISU got Garie Blando to fly one to right, but Aly Cappaert could not secure it, allowing two more to score and get UNLV ahead 7-0.
The Final Runs
Paris Imholz came in for the Cyclones and did well to keep the Rebels off the board for a couple of innings. However, UNLV eventually got the needed runs to end the game early. In the bottom of the fourth, Samantha Juarez reached on a throwing error by Imholz and Merina Ili got on via a fielder's choice where Nychole Antillon's throw to second was late. Pinch hitter Fahren Glackin was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Imholz got Cordova into a foul out to first. However, the catch took Spendlove into the ISU dugout railing, allowing UNLV to bring home a run to make it 8-0. The Rebels then made it 9-0 on a fielding error by Lexi Slater.
Rough Day for ISU Offense
The Cyclone offense struggled against the Rebles, recording only three hits. It took the Cyclones until the fourth inning to get a runner in scoring position, when Maddie Reese got there after reaching on a fielder's choice. In the fifth, Slater led off with a single, and was eventually moved over to second, but that was as far as she got as the Rebels got the final outs to end the game.

Iowa State has another doubleheader tomorrow, starting at 6 p.m. local, 8 p.m. Central Time, when Iowa State takes on Houston, followed by the Cyclones taking on UC-Santa Barbara immediately afterwards.
