AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State softball team moved to 4-0 on the season with a pair of dominant wins at the Cyclone Indoor Invitational on Saturday. Iowa State outscored its opponents 17-1 on the day, as two ISU pitchers picked up their first-career victories as Cyclones.
Game One: Iowa State 10 North Dakota 1
The lone opponent run of the day came in the first inning of action, as North Dakota's Megan Keegan singled to score teammate Nicole Babrowski, giving UND a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the second, the Iowa State offense came to life in a big way. Brittany Gomez, as she often does, ignited things for the Cyclones. Gomez hit a 2-RBI single up the middle to bring Nychole Antillon and Sammie Hildreth home.
Aly Cappaert would follow that up by smacking a triple down the right field line to score Gomez and Cathlin Bingham. The Cyclones then capitalized on a couple Fighting Hawk miscues as Cappaert, Kelsey McFarland, Rachel Hartman and Kirsten Caudle all scored to help Iowa State take control with an 8-1 lead.
In the third inning, following a Bingham walk, Cappaert crushed a ball deep to center that bounced off the peak of the Bergstrom Indoor Complex and was ruled a ground-rule home run. The senior's moonshot put Iowa State up 10-1 and in position for the eight-run rule victory after five innings.
Emma Hylen was another bright spot for the Cyclones. After getting some relief work in the Cyclones' 10-inning thriller vs. Eastern Illinois on Friday, the freshman got the first start of her ISU career against North Dakota. Hylen was in command throughout her four innings of work, giving up just two hits and one unearned run. The Roseville, Minn., native also struck out six Fighting Hawk batters on the day.
Game Two: Iowa State 7 IUPUI 0
The Iowa State offense got off to a fast start once again vs. IUPUI. Gomez singled and stole second to open the game, and was immediately brought home by an RBI double down the right field line by Cathlin Bingham. Bingham is tied for the team lead with eight hits on the season in just 12 at-bats.
Following a Hartman walk, Sammie Hildreth launched a three-run homer to left field, putting the Cyclones up 4-0 early. Hildreth is tied with Cappaert for the team lead with six RBIs each.
The Cyclones got things going again in the bottom of the fourth, as Bingham collected a 2-RBI single to center field to score Gomez and pinch runner Katie Dukes. Hartman's RBI single later in the inning would bring Bingham home and give the Cyclones their decisive 7-0 lead.
Junior Mandi Moore, who played her first two collegiate seasons at Indian Hills Community College, also made her first start as a Cyclone. Moore had closed things out the final inning of Iowa State's first win of the day, and got the nod from head coach Stacy Gemeinhardt-Cesler to face the Jaguars later in the day. She went five innings, giving up just three hits and no runs. It was a steady performance for the Ottumwa, Iowa, native and a good sign for what looks to be a deepened pitching staff this season.
Newcomer Kristine Kimberley also threw her first pitches in the Cardinal and Gold on Saturday. The sophomore pitched the sixth and seventh innings, giving up no runs and just two hits. Kimberley's successful outing was aided by perhaps the defensive play of the day.
With no outs and a runner on first, Kimberley got IUPUI's Maggie Good to hit a roller up the middle. Gomez, playing shortstop, closed the gap quickly and made the play, stepping on second to get the runner before firing a missile to Hartman at first to complete the double play.
Cyclones of the Day
Emma Hylen and Mandi Moore. While a number of Cyclones, Cappaert and Bingham in particular, put up outstanding offensive numbers, today's honor goes to the pitchers. Comined, Hylen and Moore threw nine innings on the day, giving up just seven total hits and no earned runs. The ISU pitching, combined with a solid defensive effort, was tough to beat.
