HOUSTON, Texas – The Iowa State softball team (7-3 overall) closed out the 2016 Houston Invitational with a 6-4 loss to Ball State on Sunday. The Cyclones wrap up a 2-2 weekend, with both losses coming in extra innings.
Game One: Ball State 6, Iowa State 4
The Cyclones threatened in the first, as Brittany Gomez got things started with a lead-off single, before stealing second, her fifth steal of the season. Aly Cappaert then walked and Gomez took third on a wild pitch to put runners on the corners with just one out. ISU was unable to strike, however, and ended the inning scoreless.
Sally Woolpert made sure the Cyclones didn't leave any runners stranded in the second. After Rachel Hartman got a two-out single, the freshman stepped to the plate and smashed the first home run of her career over the left field fence to put Iowa State up 2-0. Woolpert was the fifth Cyclone to hit a home run in Houston.
Ball State responded in the top of the fourth with a home run of their own on a solo shot to center from Rachel Houck. The Cardinals put a runner on third later in the inning via triple, but ISU pitcher Savannah Sanders got the ensuing BSU batter swinging to get out of the inning.
The Iowa State offense answered right back with two more in the bottom half of the inning. Kirsten Caudle and Nychole Antillon started things off with base hits to open the inning, with Antillon reaching via bunt. Rachel Hartman then smacked an RBI single to center, which brought Caudle around to score and moved pinch runner Katie Dukes to third. Woolpert brought Dukes home on a single to left for her third RBI of the game, putting ISU ahead 4-1.
Ball State tightened things back up with a two-run shot from senior Emily Dabkowski to cut the ISU lead to 4-3 in the top of the sixth. The Cardinals then got a solo homer from Elise Sandberg in the seventh to tie things up at 4-4. Following the home run, Emma Hylen entered in relief of Savannah Sanders. Sanders went 6.1 innings, giving up four runs on six hits, to go with five strikeouts.
The Cardinals scored two in the top of the eighth, and the Cyclones were unable to mount a comeback falling, 6-4.
