AMES, Iowa – Iowa State junior outfielder Tatum Johnson has been named the Big 12 Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.
Johnson joins teammates Sydney Malott (player - 4/15) and Lauren Schurman (pitcher - 4/15) as weekly award winners this season. With Malott having earned a Player of the Week honor earlier this year, it marks the first time in program history that the Cyclones have had two different athletes named Big 12 Player of the Week in one season.
Johnson is the eighth Cyclone to be honored as a Big 12 Player of the week, joining Malott (2025), fellow teammate Angelina Allen (2024), Sami Williams (3x), Logan Schaben (2018), Sarah Hawryluk (2013), Ashley Killeen (2006) and Rainey Eanes (2001).
Tatum had a monster week on the diamond for the Cyclones, as she helped lead her team to a 5-1 record across a six-game stretch in seven days. Starting in center field in all six games, Johnson collected eight hits on the week, going 8-15 with a .533 batting average, and drawing a whopping nine walks.
She was an on-base machine for the Cyclones, as Johnson found herself aboard 72 percent of the time this past week. Being on base resulted in her scoring a team-high eight runs and amassing a team-best 15 total bases. As part of her monster week, Johnson had a two-homer game at UNI last Tuesday, marking her first multi-homer game of her career.
In total, Johnson led the Cyclones in batting average, runs scored, homers (2), total bases (15), slugging percentage (1.000), walks drawn, HBP (1), and on-base percentage.
Johnson will be back in action later today, as Iowa State is set to head to the eastern side of the state to take on Iowa in the second game of the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. The Cyclones and Hawkeyes will meet at 5:30 pm, and the game is set to be streamed live on Big Ten Plus.
