GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Cyclones had a strong start on the first day of competition at the 2026 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships.
"I'm really excited because there's a lot more in us," said head coach Matt Leach. "I'm pleasantly surprised that after this first session we're ahead of West Virginia and Houston - that shows what this group is capable of. We had a top-10 all-time relay, diving stepped up and beat some schools we needed to beat, and we're not done yet. Each session is a new opportunity to get better, and we have to keep building from here."
Time Trials
Abbi Crum started the day for Iowa State swimming the 100 breast, posting a time of 1:03.28. Matilde Geromin followed in the 200 breast, clocking a 2:17.05. Emma Kuhn closed out the morning for the Cyclones in the 50 backstroke, finishing with a time of 26.29.
200 Medley Relay
The group of Emma Kuhn, Grace Swoboda, Kendall Mallers and Piper Hagen opened finals competition in the 200 medley relay, finishing in 1:40.68 to earn an eighth-place finish overall for the Cyclones. A strong anchor leg helped seal the finish and give Iowa State a late push in the race. This time also ranks ninth on Iowa State's all-time top performers list and 10th on the program's all-time top times list.
Team Diving
The Cyclones competed in the team diving event with Maggie Bendell, Ally Blumenfeld and Kate Mitchell each contributing two dives. The trio combined for a total score of 239.90 in finals competition, finishing eighth overall.
800 Free Relay
Iowa State closed the evening with the 800 freestyle relay with Hagen, Keirlyn Mullica, Corinne Guist and Megan Marquardt representing the Cyclones. Hagen led the group with a 1:51.05, just .80 seconds away from her personal best. Altogether, the group posted a time of 7:29.18 to finish 10th overall.
