AMES, Iowa – Iowa State men's basketball head coach T.J. Otzelberger has named Allan Hanson as a new assistant coach. Hanson will begin his duties with the Cyclones immediately.
"Allan Hanson will be an incredible resource for the young men in our program," Otzelberger said. "He's a competitor, proven winner and someone who takes tremendous pride in student-athletes realizing their potential. We look forward to him impacting our pressure defensive system as well as working with our point guards."
Hanson spent the 2025-26 season at Bradley, helping the Braves to a 21-13 overall record and a second-place finish in the Missouri Valley Conference standings. The Braves earned a spot in the NIT, falling to No. 2 seed Dayton in the opening round. Bradley finished third at the ESPN Events Invitational in November, starting a seven-game winning streak.
Prior to his year in Peoria, Hanson spent two seasons at Southern Utah. During his time with the Thunderbirds, he helped develop two players that earned All-WAC honors. Hanson went to Southern Utah after spending the 2022-23 season at Western Illinois. He helped develop a First Team All-Summit League player, while the Leathernecks had enjoyed their first winning season in over 10 years. Southern Utah and Western Illinois were both coached by Rob Jeter while Hanson was on staff.
"I am extremely excited to join T.J. Otzelberger's staff at Iowa State," Hanson said. "I look forward to helping continue to build the success the program has had, both on and off the court. I am grateful for this opportunity."
Hanson was the Head Boy's Basketball Coach at Nicolet High School in Glendale, Wis. from 2016-22. He tallied a 117-39 career record, while leading the Knights to the 2019 Wisconsin Division 2 State Basketball Title. Nicolet finished the year with a 27-1 record and was ranked No. 7 in the country by USA Today. Hanson was with his alma mater, Milwaukee, for the 2014-15 (Video Coordinator) and 2015-16 (Director of Basketball Operations) seasons.
A four-year letterwinner at Milwaukee, Hanson appeared in 114 games with 57 starts for the Panthers from 2004-08. Hanson helped the Panthers to a pair of ranked wins in his time, beating No. 21 Alabama in 2005 and No. 24 Oklahoma in 2006. The 2004-05 team went 26-6, winning the Horizon League Championship and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history. The 2005-06 team won the Horizon League Championship again with a 22-9 record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Cyclones finished the season with a 29-8 record, tied for the second-most wins in school history. Iowa State finished the season ranked No. 8 in the AP Top 25 Poll, the 52nd-straight week the Cyclones have been ranked. ISU's AP Top 25 streak is the second-longest in school history and the fourth-longest active streak in the country. Playing in its 25th NCAA Tournament in program history, the Cyclones advanced to the Sweet 16 for the eighth time in program history.
