Mission of the Office of Athletics Academic Services
To guide our student-athletes through their ongoing transitions by offering comprehensive services prior to arrival and beyond graduation in their pursuit of academic excellence.
To empower our student-athletes to become productive citizens of their communities through education, servant leadership and integrity.
Providing services and programming that foster:
AAS provides support to Cyclone student-athletes and serves as a liaison between the student-athlete and campus resources. The function of our support team is to assist student-athletes with individualized academic programs to ensure success in the classroom. These programs may consist of structured study hall, tutoring, mentoring, and tracking academic progress.
Tutorial Program
The Tutoring Program experience allows student-athletes the opportunity to further their knowledge in a specific area. The intent of the program is to uphold the integrity of the educational process while integrating independent thinking and learning skills. Tutors ultimately assist with course content and study strategies. All tutorial staff is trained to comply with Iowa State University, Big 12, and NCAA rules and guidelines. AAS provides one-on-one tutoring, group tutoring, course specific tutoring, as well as a satellite office support from the campus Writing Center. Tutorial assistance is offered to all student-athletes. Student-athletes request a tutor and schedule tutoring by using our EAB scheduling system.
Mentoring Program
The Mentoring Program is designed to help first-year student-athletes acclimate to Iowa State University and collegiate academia. Student-athletes meet with their peer mentor to find more efficient ways to organize, manage their time, improve study skills and test preparation. All mentors are trained in the same fashion as academic tutors.
Advising and Academic Coordinator
The main focus for the Athletics Academic Services staff is to help student-athletes graduate and excel academically in their time at ISU. Coordinators are available to assist student-athletes as they register for classes, monitor athletic eligibility, secure tutorial help, and provide on-going support and encouragement. The academic coordinator assists student-athletes in setting academic goals, providing time management and academic success strategies and creating graduation plans. Advisors also communicate with the coaching staff in monitoring the student-athletes day-to-day achievements.
