Cyclone Academy
Summer Bridge is an excellent opportunity for incoming Cyclone student-athletes to begin their transition to ISU during the summer session starting in mid-June. Student-athletes are enrolled in 6 credit hours of degree applicable coursework; ideally one in-person course and one online course. This ensures that they are gaining experience in both classroom styles. Student-athletes are assigned tutors and have daily study hall with their academic coordinators (Monday through Friday). All incoming student-athletes work on academic/study skills as well as organization and time management throughout the bridge program. Grades are checked on a weekly basis and reported to coaches.
Cyclone Speaker Series
As part of Summer Bridge, OSAD hosts a dynamic and impactful speaker that engages Cyclone student-athletes on topics relevant to their personal growth and development. Past topics have included financial literacy, gambling, healthy relationships, substance abuse, decision making, and leadership. The speaker series is considered mandatory for all bridge student-athletes and athletics department staff is encouraged to attend as well.
New Student-Athlete Orientation
The Office of Student-Athlete Development provides New Student-Athlete Orientation prior to the start of the Summer, Fall and Spring semesters. All new student-athletes are required to attend, as it is an exciting time for incoming student-athletes to interact with their new Cyclone family! The major focus of the orientation is to help student-athletes feel at home, not only within the athletic department but also within the university community. This orientation also allows the new class of student-athletes to get to know each other and commit as a class to ISU goals of graduation, winning programs, great student-athlete experiences, and compliance with NCAA rules and ethical conduct.
U ST 101D
University Studies 101D is a one-credit course designed to help student-athletes successfully transition to life at Iowa State University. U ST 101D creates opportunities for student-athletes to become “self-managed”, responsible for self-actions, good decision makers and a successful part of the campus community. Students will gain exposure to the following areas:
1. Introduction to the institution’s resources, services, and staff;
2. Practical knowledge to assist in navigating the college experience;
3. The Student-Athlete Affairs program and its holistic development practices;
4. Continued development of academic, athletic, and personal goal-setting;
5. Utilizing personal reflection as a learning tool;
6. The tradition and in the ISU and Ames communities.
- International Student-Athlete Programming - Staff from the ISU International Students & Scholars Office (ISSO) meet with international student-athletes, discussing topics such as visas, taxes, travel, and I-90s.
