Jalyn Baker is in his third season as an assistant coach for strength and conditioning at Iowa State.
The 2024 Cyclones posted the greatest season in school history, recording an 11-3 overall record which marked the first season with double-digit victories in the program's 133 seasons. ISU reached the Dr Pepper Big 12 Championship game and won the Pop-Tarts Bowl with a thrilling 42-41 win against No. 15 Miami.
Wide receiver Jayden Higgins earned All-America accolades and 15 players earned All-Big 12 recognition, including five on the first or second teams.
The Cyclones outscored opponents 225-127 in the second half and 139-58 in the fourth quarter alone on their way to the record-setting season.
In his first season at ISU, the team finished 7-6 overall and 6-3 in Big 12 play, recording the largest win improvement (+5) in conference play among Power-5 schools. The Cyclones also earned a trip to the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.
Cyclone players gained an average of eight pounds per player during their first offseason with Baker on staff and ISU noticeably improved down the stretch in games, outscoring opponents 167-133 in the second half.
Cornerback T.J. Tampa earned All-Big 12 and All-America honors, while Beau Freyler and Jeremiah Cooper joined tight end Stevo Klotz and wide receiver Jaylin Noel in earning all-league accolades as well. Tampa was a fourth-round pick by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Baker, a Clinton, Mississippi, native, spent two seasons (2021-22) at Boise State, helping the Broncos to a pair of bowl games. BSU went 10-4 and won the Frisco Bowl in 2022, while also earning a spot in the Mountain West Conference championship game. The 2022 squad outgained opponents by more than 1,200 yards (102.2 per game) and dominated the line of scrimmage with 27 sacks and just 14 allowed.
Prior to his time in Boise, Baker was an assistant coordinator for the Walter Peyton Center at Jackson State, where he worked with all Tiger athletic teams. During 2019-20, he was a sports performance - strength and conditioning graduate assistant for Jackson State, working primarily with the football program. He also led workouts for a number of women's programs, including soccer, volleyball and women's basketball.
Baker has also spent time at Houston and his alma mater, Prairie View A&M.
During the summer of 2017, Baker worked at the D1 Training Facility where he assisted with the training of NFL All-Pro and multi-year pro-bowler Fletcher Cox.
Baker graduate from Prairie View A&M in 2018, earning his degree in kinesiology/physical therapy.
