Ryan Gent, a member of the Iowa State football team from 2009-12, is in his first season at his alma mater, serving in a quality control role while working with the Cyclone offense.
Gent joins the Cyclones after spending the 2024 season as assistant head coach and wide receivers coach at Northwest Missouri State.
While coaching the Bearcats, Gent mentored All-MIAA wide receiver Luke Mathews, who led the league in yards per catch (19.1).
It was Gent’s second stint in Maryville, Missouri after serving as a graduate assistant coaching tight ends and running backs from 2014-16. He helped the Bearcats post a 41-2 record during the three seasons, while earning back-to-back national championships in 2015 and 2016.
Between his two tenures at Northwest Missouri State, Gent coached at FCS school Abilene Christian (2017-19) and NCAA Division II South Dakota Mines (2020-24). He was wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at ACU, while calling offensive plays as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks/wide receivers coach at South Dakota Mines.
At South Dakota Mines, Gent coached three All-RMAC first-team offensive players and two second-team selections.
Gent, a native of Wellman, Iowa, played for the Cyclones under Paul Rhoads and was a member of three teams that reached bowl games. He was recognized as the Ennis Haywood Consideration Award Winner in 2012, given to the player that provides the greatest cooperation to the team and staff.
Gent was a two-time First Team Academic All-Big 12 honoree and on Iowa State’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) executive board serving as the vice president.
Following his playing career he served as a student assistant working with the Cyclone quarterbacks.
He earned his bachelor’s degree from Iowa State in agricultural engineering in 2013 and his master’s degree in sports management from Northwest Missouri State in 2015.
Gent and his wife Lauren, have two sons, Will and Leo.
