Wayne Bolt has coached conference championship teams and nine bowl squads in a career of 30 years at UAB, Troy, Clemson, Auburn and Iowa State. It was no surprise then that ISU head coach Gene Chizik made an immediate call to Bolt after assuming leadership of the Cyclone football program. That phone call paid immediate dividends last season.

Under Bolt, Iowa State’s defense against run improved from 11th in the Big 12 and 89th nationally in 2006 to sixth in the Big 12 and 44th nationally last season. Opponents average yards per rush declined from 4.6 to 3.9. Overall, an Iowa State defense that ranked 11th in the Big 12 and 102nd nationally in 2006 improved to seventh in the Big 12 and 65th nationally in 2007. The defense was led by one of Bolt’s pupils, all-Big 12 linebacker Alvin Bowen. Bowen is now a member of the Buffalo Bills of the NFL.

Bolt has coached more than 20 collegians that went on to the NFL. At Troy as defensive coordinator, Bolt coached New York Giant defensive end Osi Umenyiora and Dallas Cowboy outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware. Troy ranked fourth under Bolt in total defense for the 2002 season.

Bolt was defensive coordinator on UAB’s 2004 Hawaii Bowl team. During his 67-game tenure in the same position at Troy, his defenses dominated in conference play, ranking first or second in scoring defense, rushing defense and total defense.

Bolt was an All-American offensive lineman at East Carolina, where he played under the legendary Pat Dye. He then coached on Dye’s staff at Wyoming and at Auburn, where the Tigers played in the Sugar and Cotton Bowls among four bowl appearances and won a SEC title. Under head coach Danny Ford at Clemson, Bolt was a part of teams that won three Atlantic Coast Conference titles and played in four bowl games.
