- Peterson won gold (1972 in Munich) and silver (1976 in Montreal) medals before his final chance at Olympic glory ended with our nation’s boycott in 1980
- Two-time NCAA champion, three-time All-American and three-time Big Eight titlist
- Helped ISU win NCAA championships in 1970 and 1972 for Harold Nichols
- Won six Midlands Open titles, equaling the most by a Cyclone (Dan Gable)
- Ben’s brother, John, was also a gold and silver medalist in the Olympic Games
