ISU Sweeps TAMUCC to End Non-Conference

LAS VEGAS – Iowa State (6-5, 0-0 Big 12) swept Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (2-8, 0-0 Southland) Sunday in the non-conference finale to end the Lucky Aces Volleyball Invite. Set scores on the day were 25-17, 25-17, 25-19.
Rachel Van Gorp saved 22 attacks through the three sets for a dominant average of 7.33 per set. Van Gorp had her second 20-plus dig match this season.
ISU had its second match of the season hitting over. 300, dialing in an efficiency of .343 after 48 kills. Pam McCune was a big contributor to that efficiency, hitting 12 with just one error on 15 attempts. McCune's hitting percentage of .733 ties the seventh-highest single-match hitting percentage in program history (minimum 15 attempts). McCune's name is now listed twice on the top 10.
Nayeli Gonzalez has now went back-to-back with 10-plus kills as the outside hit 12 today. Gonzalez also served to a season-high two aces and nearly had a double-double with nine digs.
Setter Ava Martin had 33 assists, four kills at .800 and four digs.
SET ONE
Martin snuck over a setter kill, while Nayeli Ti'a followed that with an ace as the Cyclones took an 8-3 start. With the run alive at five-straight (10-3), TAMUCC called a timeout. With the score at 11-5, Gonzalez put down her fourth kill on as many attempts. The Cyclones continued to roll as Macie Lupkes won a joust at the net to make it 14-6. Iowa State would go on to win the set 25-17 hitting at .342.
SET TWO
TAMUCC scored four before ISU got on the board, but the Cyclones followed flipping the lead at 6-5. The owner of the lead continued to change with another at 12-11 as Gonzalez tallied her eighth kill. ISU won a challenge as the score was brough to 18-14, while Alea Goolsby put up a wall to score next. The lead remained with ISU to take the set 25-17.
SET THREE
McCune sent over her eighth kill on 10 swings to go up 2-0. The set was a close one as the Islanders made it a one-point set at 14-13. McCune entered double figures hitting at a clip of .692 as the set reached the media timeout with ISU ahead 15-13. From there, Iowa State controlled the lead to end the match in a sweep at 25-
