- Named Big 12 Coach-of-the-Year in 2004 when Iowa State was co-champions of the North Division
- Led Iowa State to its first Top-10 national ranking (No. 9) in 2002
- As a 29-point underdog, the Cyclones defeated his alma mater (Iowa) by a 27-9 margin to break a 15-game losing streak to the Hawkeyes
