- Started at first base and hit .302 for Iowa State’s 1957 club that won the Big Seven Championship and finished third in the College World Series
- Played 10 years in the majors with the White Sox, Pilots (teammate of “Ball Four” author Jim Bouton), Brewers, Cardinals and Pirates after a position switch to catcher
- After his playing career ended, McNertney became a coach and served as bullpen instructor with the Yankees and Red Sox
- Spent eight years (1989-96) as an assistant baseball coach for the Cyclones working primarily with catchers
