- First football All-American in school history, earning second-team honors as a guard according to the Chicago Tribune and Knute Rockne
- Became the first Cyclone to play in the NFL (for George Halas’ Chicago Staleys, later re-named the Bears)
- Won an intercollegiate wrestling championship, too, and the only loss of his career came in his first match when he competed with a broken hand
- One of the pioneers of college wrestling (he started the program at Michigan), Barker help draft the first set of rules and assisted with planning for the inaugural NCAA Championship
- Inducted in the College Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1991
