GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Iowa State women's gymnastics team put up a hard fight in the quadrangular in Florida, March 2. In the end, No. 8 ISU took second place (195.075) over Kentucky (193.700) and Ball State (193.500) while falling to No. 10 Florida (195.175). The Cyclones are now 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the Big 12.
Cyclone Sissy Huey's high marks on several events helped lead ISU to a second place finish. Huey took first in the all-around competition with a 39.225. Gators Kara Waterhouse and Hilary Thomson won second and third places, respectively. Iowa State's Jessy Smith came in fourth in the event (38.975).
Huey tied for first on the balance beam with Kentucky's Mindy Smith (9.875). Also placing on the beam in a tow-way tie for third was Cyclone Courtney Sarrett with Jenny Crow of Florida (9.850).
On the uneven bars, Huey took second (9.875) behind Florida's Erin Pendleton (9.900), while Florida's Hilary Thompson recorded a first-place score in the floor exercise (9.975). Huey was right behind in a three-way tie for second involving Wildcat Aronda Primault and Gator Lindsey Miner. Huey's score of 9.900 in the event marks a tie of her career-high.
ISU's Karen Kuplicki was involved in a three-way tie for second on the vault with Florida's Miner and Teal Chiabotti. Kentucky's Beth Coleman placed first in the event.
Iowa State next plays host to Missouri on Sunday, March 2, at 2 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum in Ames.
