AMES, Iowa - Jackson Vroman, a bundle of energy around the basket, scored 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as Iowa State rolled past Binghamton 86-56 Saturday night to win the Cyclone Challenge.
Iowa State (5-0) dominated with its inside play and defense and won its own tournament for the seventh time in eight years. Jake Sullivan added 21 points for the Cyclones and freshman Adam Haluska scored 18 on 8-of-11 shooting.
Anthony Green's 22 points led Binghamton (4-2), which shot 23 percent in the first half and 35.5 percent (22-of-62) for the game.
Vroman scored only four points in a victory over Western Illinois on Friday night but was a different player against Binghamton. A 6-foot-10 junior, Vroman made 10-of-16 shots and had five blocks. He faltered only at the free throw line, where he missed seven of 10 attempts, including an airball.
His most spectacular play came early in the second half when a shot by teammate Tim Barnes bounced high off the rim. Vroman slid in from the left side, leaped above the crowd under the basket and tipped the ball in to give Iowa State a 44-23 lead.
Binghamton got the lead down to 53-41 when Green stole the ball and made a layup with 10:30 left. But Iowa State kept pounding the ball inside and went on a 14-2 run that included five points by Vroman to open a 67-43 lead.
The Cyclones went on to lead by as many as 32.
