LINCOLN, Neb. - The Iowa State softball team lost a 2-0 decision at Nebraska Tuesday afternoon at Bowlin Stadium. Kelly Wardein paced the Cyclone offense going 2-for-3 at the plate. As a team, the Cyclones outhit the Huskers 7-to-5 but were unable to come out with the win. The loss evened Iowa State's overall record at 13-13 and dropped its Big 12 mark to 4-5. With the win the Huskers improved to 35-7 on the year and to 5-2 in league play.
Nebraska broke the scoreless tie, recording the only two runs of the game in the bottom of the third. NU's Kim Ogee was hit by a pitch with one out, and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Leigh Suhr drove her in with an RBI single to right field, plating Ogee for the 1-0 advantage. The Huskers' Nicole Trimboli followed with an RBI single to center, scoring Suhr for the 2-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth Iowa State threatened to even the score, as Wardein led off with a double that hit the left-center fence. Laura Browning then singled and stole second to put runners at second and third with no outs. But NU's Lisa Wangler made a diving catch in left field to keep Julia Lindsey off base, and the next two ISU batters popped up to end the inning.
Erica Martinez (6-7) took the loss for the Cyclones despite a solid effort on the mound. She finished the contest allowing two runs to score on five hits. The junior fanned seven Huskers and issued just two walks on the day. Nebraska's Leigh Ann Walker got the win to improve to 19-2 on the mound this season.
