LAWRENCE, Kan. – Iowa State (28-20, 8-12 Big 12) opened its final road Big 12 series of the season by splitting a doubleheader against Kansas (31-16, 12-8 Big 12). ISU would drop game one before evening the series in game two.
The Jayhawks came out with a fire in the first contest, plating all 12 runs in the first three innings of action. ISU was unable to match the fight, stranding seven runners in a 12-2 loss that took all of five innings.
The Cyclones responded in game two by downing the Jayhawks, 4-1. ISU held Kansas scoreless until the fourth, where KU got a solo shot. ISU had just four hits, but took advantage of six Jayhawk walks and a pair of errors to set up a Saturday rubber match.
Kansas 12, Iowa State 2 (5 Inn.)
After Iowa State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, it was all Jayhawks as KU scored seven unanswered runs to take command of the contest. The Jayhawks would only finish with seven hits, but went on to win 12-2 in five innings.
Iowa State scattered three hits across three players, with only one going for extra bases. Lauren Schurman (15-7) started the contest, picking up the loss, while both Hailey Holtz and Ava Mullen saw time in relief. Holtz would pick up her first career strikeout in the loss.
Presley Limbaugh set the tone for the Jayhawks, going 3-3 at the plate with three runs scored to lead all players. Anna Soles had a game-high three RBI while Ella Boyer drew a pair of walks. Lila Partridge (6-3) went the distance in the win, striking out a pair.
How it Happened
Clemons led off game one with a walk, and three batters later, ISU had the bases loaded with one out. A sacrifice fly into left from Karlee Ford would plate Clemons and put ISU up 1-0 heading to the bottom of the inning.
Kansas responded emphatically in the bottom of the inning, using a bases-loaded walk, a two-RBI double and a pair of groundout RBI to take a 5-1 lead.
A two-run shot from Anna Soles in the second pushed the Kansas lead to 7-1 heading into the third.
ISU got a second run in the third, taking advantage of a KU error to cut the deficit to five. The Jayhawks didn't slow down, though, plating another five runs in the bottom of the third to push their lead to 12-2.
Neither side would plate a run in the final two innings, as Kansas would go on to earn a 10-run lead in five innings.

Iowa State 4, Kansas 1
Game two started much slower, with ISU scoring the first run in the third. Two more in the fourth and one in the sixth did the job for the Cyclones, as Kansas only got one run on a solo shot.
Jessie Clemons led the team with a pair of hits and had a pair of RBI, as the Cyclone leadoff powered the team to a road win. Also standing out in the win was Jaiden Ralston (3-5), who dealt six, three-hit innings in relief.
KU was limited to just four knocks after notching seven in game one. The Jayhawks saw four different players pick up hits, with only Campbell Bagshaw getting an RBI on a home run. Chloe Barber (8-6) earned the loss, walking five in 3.2 innings.
How it Happened
Each side stranded a pair in the opening inning of game two. It wasn't until the third that the game would see a run cross the plate, as ISU again used a sacrifice fly to get on the board. With runners on second and third with no outs, Tatum Johnson skyed a ball into right field to plate a run.
The Cyclones tacked on two more in the third. KU would walk the bases loaded and bring up Clemons. With two outs, Clemons sliced a single up into shallow center to plate a pair and push the ISU cushion to 3-0.
Following a scoreless fifth, ISU again took advantage of a shaky Kansas defense, capitalizing on an error to score run number four.
A KU solo shot in the bottom of the sixth wasn't enough to spark a comeback, as ISU evened the series at one apiece, earning a 4-1 win in game two.
