TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Iowa State softball team ended the 2003 Fiesta Bowl Tournament with a 1-0 win against Cal State Fullerton on Sunday afternoon at Arizona State's Rose Mofford Sports Complex. With the win, ISU's record improved to 2-4 on the young season. Senior Erica Martinez hit a double in the game, which led to the winning run. With Ashley Core in to pitch run, she scored on a wild pitch by Fullerton's Jodie Cox to earn the game's only run and a big win for the Cyclones.
"This was a very big win for us," Head Coach Ruth Crowe said. "Fullerton is ranked in the top 10 and our kids really showed a lot of heart in playing hard and well. The whole tournament was a good thing for us. "
Earlier on Sunday, the Cyclones lost to No. 15 Fresno State, 8-1. Junior Julia Lindsey scored the team's lone run in the first inning. Sophomore Lindsey Herrin had three RBI and sophomore Kim Rodgers also had a hit for the Cyclones. ISU had three hits in the game, compared to Fresno State's 12 hits. Freshman Kristen Karanzias and seniors Jen Bice and Erica Martinez all saw action on the pitching mound against Fresno State.
In Saturday night's late game against No. 13 Arizona State, Iowa State lost, 3-1. Senior Katie Ruby scored the Cyclones' lone run in the bottom of the 7th inning on a pass ball. Kelly Wardein had a double for ISU. Arizona State's Adriana Garcia hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to assure the Sun Devils win.
