San Antonio, Texas--The Iowa State soccer team suffered a 4-1 loss to Kansas on Wednesday afternoon at the 2004 Big 12 Tournament. The tournament is being held at Blossom Soccer Stadium in San Antonio, Texas. Kansas, the No.1 seed, scored two goals in each half to defeat No. 8 seeded Iowa State. The Cyclones end the 2004 season with an 8-12 overall record, while KU improves to 17-3.
Kansas jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Caroline Smith connected on a penalty kick at 4:55. The Jayhawks found the goal again in the 21st minute when Amy Geha headed a cross into the lower right corner off an assist by Rachel Gilfillan.
The Cyclones got on the board in dramatic fashion when freshman Stephanie Kaphingst redirected off a free kick by sophomore Jess Villhauer in the 31 minute.
Kansas had eight first-half shots to Iowa States seven. The Jayhawks also had two first-half corner kicks to ISU's one.
"I thought we played a solid first half," said head coach Rebecca Hornbacher.
In the second half, Kansas scored its third goal of the game when Geha scored, unassisted, when a directed blocked pass went into the far side of the net. It was her second goal of the game. KU ended the scoring when Holly Gault scored from eight yards out.
"We got a great goal and we had the momentum going into the second half, but Kansas took advantage of its opportunities," Hornbacher said. "They just played a better game than us. Now, we have to focus on what it'll take for us to be a more solid team. It's disappointing that the season ended now, but I'm really proud of the team and of the efforts they gave."
Junior Kristina Baumann and sophomore Kate Kirwan led the team with four shots each. Freshman goaltender Joanna Haig had three saves on the day.
The Cyclones end their ninth season of soccer with an 8-12 record and a 4-6 Big 12 mark. Kaphingst, junior Amy Flores and Baumann finish the season tops on the team with four goals each.
