AMES, Iowa – Iowa State Head Coach Matt Fannon has announced the hiring of Matt Tennyson as Soccer Development Coach.
"Tenny has a great temperament and is someone the women will take to immediately," said Fannon. "He has good ties to the area and has a lot of good qualities to bring to the squad. We are excited that he is starting with us."
Tennyson is no stranger to the state of Iowa, as he comes to Ames after spending the last two years with the Drake soccer program. Tennyson played collegiately at Buena Vista and also served as an assistant coach for two seasons (2019-20). He has also spent the 2022 season at Coe, serving as both an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.
Between his stops at Drake (2024-25) and Coe (2022), Tennyson spent the 2023 season as the Director of Player Performance at Xavier. He also had a stint coaching at Lake Forest College (2021), where he was both the goalkeeper coach and recruiting coordinator.
During his playing career for the Beavers, Tennyson was a team captain and an Honorable Mention All-Iowa Conference selection as a senior. He compiled 147 career saves, including 68 during his senior year.
Tennyson has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Buena Vista. He holds a United Soccer Coaches National Diploma and USC GK Level 1 Diploma as well as a USSF D-License.
Iowa State's spring soccer campaign continues next month, when the team heads to Muscatine to face Iowa on April 3.
