SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Iowa State softball team defeated Sacrameto State, 2-1 Saturday afternoon in the team's fourth game of the San Diego State Campbell/Cartier Classic tournament. The win improved ISU's record to 2-7 after it dropped an earlier Saturday contest against Long Beach State. Freshman Alyssa Ransom was the winning pitcher for ISU, while senior Julia Lindsey had two hits and a RBI against Sacramento State.
Against Sacramento State, neither team scored until the Cyclones scored in the top of the fourth inning. They added another run in the top of the seventh inning and Sacramento State scored its lone run in the bottom of the seventh. ISU got runs from freshmen Jennifer Bigbee and Fallon Johnson, while hits came from Lindsey (2), Ashley Killeen, Jessica Quade, Misty Kimura and Johnson. The Cyclones had six hits and four errors compared to Sacramento State's two hits and zero errors.
ISU lost to Long Beach State, 6-2, in the days earlier game. Sophomore Cary Akins was the game's big player as she went one-of-two with one run and one RBI. Senior Ashely Core scored ISU's other run. The Cyclones got hits from Akins, Killeen and Kimura. Long Beach State jumped on the scoreboard right away with two runs in the first inning. It added two more runs in the fifth inning and two more in the seventh. Iowa State got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning. ISU had three hits and two errors for the game, while Long Beach State had six hits and zero errors.
Katie Reichling, Kristen Karanzias and Alyssa Ransom all split time on the pitching mound, combining for four strikeouts and one walk, with Reichling taking the loss. Long Beach State's Meredith Cervenka got the win.
Iowa State will continue play at the 2004 Campbell/Cartier classic on Sunday when it takes on No. 23 Fresno State at 11a.m.
