MIAMI, Fla. ? The Iowa State softball team dropped games to both No. 16 Oregon and Florida International Saturday at Florida International's University Park. It was the second day of the DeLong Florida International Tournament, which is hosted by Florida International University. In the first game of the day, Iowa State lost to No. 16 Oregon, 8-0, and fell to Florida International, 3-0, in Saturday's night game. With the losses, ISU's record falls to 0-4.
Against Oregon, the Ducks used a strong second inning to jump out to a 6-0 lead from which the Cyclones could never recover. Oregon scored two more runs in the sixth inning. The Cyclones had two hits and one error compared to Oregon's 11 hits and two errors. ISU received hits from senior Kelly Wardein and freshman Jessica Quade. Sophomore Kristen Karanzias and freshman Katie Reichling shared time on the mound and struck out one Oregon batter and walked three. Oregon's Ani Nyhus was the game's winning pitcher and had two strike outs.
Against Florida International, the game was scoreless until Florida International scored a run in the second inning. After three innings, the score was 1-0, but FIU added a run apiece in the fifth and sixth innings, to win the game, 3-0. It was the fourth game in a row the Cyclones were held scoreless. The Cyclones had two hits and two errors compared to Florida International's four hits and zero errors. Junior Misty Kimura and Reichling each had hits for ISU. Freshman Alyssa Ransom was on the mound for the Cyclones and struck out eight Florida International batters and walked four. It was her second day on the pitching mound for the Cyclones.
Iowa State will compete in the third day of the DeLong Florida International Tournament on Sunday, Feb. 8, when they play Florida International once again at 8 a.m.
